The Learning Center
The Damascus Learning Center is a day care center and kindergarten which we founded on July of 2007. While on missions to serve the local underprivileged communities of Dona Remedios Trinidad, including the indigenous people called “Dumagats” ,by way of feeding, medical programs, counseling and spiritual guidance, we began to realize the astounding number of children who are undernourished and uneducated. Because their parents are poor and lack basic education skills, they are forced to stay at home or work with their parents in finding food for the day.
We initially thought of doing a feeding program to nurse the children back to health, and teach their families about proper nutrition. Then we realized, feeding them will not be enough, “food for the body, food for the mind and food for the soul” was the inspiration we got in the time of discernment and prayer.
So we began work on the Learning Center by selecting the poorest of the poor kids, especially those whose health is in danger because of malnutrition. We are now holding classes five times a week at 8 am to 12 noon in one of the old buildings in the center. Some kids walk for miles to get to the Center, and most of them are bright and promising children. We are very fortunate that we have volunteer teachers to help the children learn. We provide these children with free snacks and meals, school supplies, uniforms and clinical services.
We also conduct livelihood seminars and training for their parents, so that they may earn and better their lives. It is our dream to empower every Filipino family to lift themselves up from poverty, malnutrition and illeteracy.
